Gordon Dickinson is the newcomer to Silverdale, a private residential home run by the efficient widow Mrs Beauregard. 15 year old Amy is the new maid, whilst Miss Leinster is a long-established resident. Gordon finds it difficult to settle in his new surroundings as his frequent recollections of his family show when he chats to these three women. He is visited by his wife from his past before this elegiac piece comes to its surprising ending.
A delightful, deceptive piece of writing.
